You are invited to participate in a food mapping meeting in a community near you!
AERO has partnered with the Montana Department of Agriculture on a food system mapping project to display market information relating to local food. This includes direct marketing farmers and ranchers, food processing facilities, distributors, and the stores, restaurants, and institutions that purchase directly from producers.
What is the Montana Food System Infrastructure Mapping Project?
It is a collaboration of private and public sector food system interests using interactive maps to enable Montana’s local food system stakeholders to understand and prioritize the gaps in our regional and statewide food value chains, and to identify the opportunities for filling those gaps.
Your perspective and knowledge are needed.
Join with others from your region to assess the progress made in the development of your local and regional food value chain infrastructure over the past several years, and what the next priorities for action and investment might be. Using the interactive maps created by this statewide project that show your area’s local food producers, processors, retailers and other food distributors and outlets, you will:
1. Look for poorly connected food system components in your area, and brainstorm ways to connect them;
2. Identify significant gaps in your region’s food system infrastructure, and what it would take to fill those gaps, and
3. Prioritize the development needs and opportunities you’ve identified in the previous steps, contributing toward what will be a statewide action agenda for further development of Montana’s food market and supply chain capacity.
We need your feedback: Come to a community meeting and spend a few hours looking at food system maps. Tell us who is missing from the maps and about what needs to be different in our food system to help farmers and other businesses in the food value chain work together and get local foods to local markets.
