Location: 1657 River Road, just west of the Russell Street Bridge
Highlights: community gathering area, compost
Established in 1997, this site is where it all began for Garden City Harvest. What began as a small community garden, is now home to many more community garden plots and a farm that includes Volunteer for Veggies program, a summer CSA share program and a winter CSA share program offering produce good for canning, freezing, and storing over winter. A green oasis just off Russell Street, River Road bustles in the spring, summer and fall with farmers, volunteers, community gardeners, CSA members, and a flock of chickens. In 2014, Garden City Harvest purchased River Road thanks to generous donors and City of Missoula’s Open Space funding. This was the first time Open Space funding was used to help secure an urban farm and community gardens!
Garden City Harvest builds community through agriculture by growing produce with and for people with low-incomes, offering education and training in ecologically conscious agriculture, and using our sites for the personal restoration of youth and adults.
Each of our community gardens provides participants with a 15 by 15 foot plot, tools, water, compost, straw, common space and the knowledge and guidance of leadership committee members and the Garden City Harvest community gardens staff. With these resources, and a little bit of persistence and patience, gardeners cultivate food for their family (and often their friends, too).
